Historic Seaside Village - Port Fairy
Steeped in history which is still evident today, the heritage of Victoria’s earliest ports has been preserved at Port Fairy, a delightful fishing village 28 kilometres west of Warrnambool. Nestled along the banks of the picturesque Moyne River where whalers and sealers once traded, the wharf is still a hub of activity for the fishing fleet, thriving abalone industry and pleasure craft.

Walk the historic trail past beautifully restored early settlers stone cottages,Georgian style merchants homes, grand public buildings and National Trust properties. Old bluestone walls and the remains of flour mills stand proud to the past. Visit Griffiths Island, dominated by the original lighthouse that guided sailors into port over a century ago and is now home to a huge colony of mutton birds who travel back and forth from the Alaskan coast departing April arriving back in September to nest.

As in many country towns there seems to be an old pub on every corner, still offering true hospitality to the many thousands of visitors who drop in for food and refreshment. The towns many restaurants and cafes offer innovative menus catering for all tastes. With a large local fishing fleet seafood is always ocean fresh and in abundance whether your pleasure is traditional fish and chips on the beach or crayfish and champagne.

Port Fairy hosts several festivals throughout the year, including the world renowned Port Fairy Folk Festival held over the Labour Day weekend in March. Approximately 40,000 people invade the town for the four day festival of folk, country, blues, jazz, bluegrass, acoustic rock and world roots music. The festival attracts artists from all over the world and has won three Australian Tourism Awards in a row and the Hall of Fame Award. Demand for tickets and accommodation is huge (tickets sell out in 1 day) so it is a good idea to contact the festival before October. More Information www.portfairyfolkfestival.com
