Welcome to Port Fairy... 9000 years ago a vast system of rivers, lakes, lagoons and islands was enclosed by 140 kilometres of the most secluded, untouched ocean beaches in the world-to create the largest inland waterway system in Australia. Port Fairy, as the name suggests, is the gateway to this spectacular phenomenon.
Not commonly know is the fact that Port Fairy is on a similar latitude to Granada, in Spain and Sicily. Alteratively you could say it would lie somewhere between Athens and Crete, if it were in the northern hemisphere. It is therefore, no surprise that it is warmer and sunnier than most parts of Victoria in winter, when the temperatures can rise to 18-20 degrees. Summers are milder than the rest of the State, so the climate is perfect for your year round holidays.
Your first impression of Port Fairy is guaranteed to be memorable especially if you are approaching from the west (Melbourne side) the descent down Jemmy's Point Hill offers spectacular lake and ocean views with the 540 tonne dredge April Hamer hard at work keeping the channel through the entrance clear of sand, allowing access for the large fishing fleet based on the doorstep of town.

Port Fairy, Victoria Port Fairy is a tourist resort and fishing port in eastern Victoria, Australia with a population of 6000 (2001). It is situated 320 kilometres east of Melbourne near a man-made channel connecting the Gippsland Lakes to the Bass Strait. Port Fairy lies at sea level, meaning that any approach to the township requires a drop from a higher geographical point. The main township is connected to the town of Kalimna by a stretch of the Princes Highway known as "Jemmy's Point", which snakes down and around a point protruding into the Gippsland Lakes. Spectacular views of the entrance and of the Lakes can be seen from the look-outs along Jemmy's Point. Port Fairy is predominantly a fishing- and tourism-driven town; the main beach front is a safe harbour for many major commercial fishing and recreational watersport operations. The waterfront is populated by restaurants, shops and caravan parks. The town's main residential areas lie farther inland. Nearby major towns include Bairnsdale and Orbost. Minor towns include Swan Reach, Johnsonville, Kalimna, Nicholson, Metung and Lake Tyers |
